The Columbia, Mississippi community is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Shannon Tanner, a recent graduate, student athlete, and beloved young member of the Columbia Academy community. His passing has left family members, friends, classmates, teachers, teammates, and loved ones in deep sorrow as they struggle to process the loss of a young life filled with promise and joy.
Shannon Tanner, who also attended West Marion High School, is being remembered as someone who brought energy, laughter, and positivity everywhere he went. Friends and former teachers describe him as “loud in the best way,” full of life, deeply caring toward others, and unashamed to openly share his Christian faith with those around him.
One former teacher shared an emotional tribute reflecting on the impact Shannon had on others, remembering him as a young man who “brought life into a room” and carried a light that naturally drew people toward him. According to loved ones, Shannon had a deep love for people and consistently looked for opportunities to encourage others and make the most out of life.
His sudden passing, coming only days after graduating high school, has deeply shaken the community and served as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be. Many friends and classmates have continued sharing heartfelt tributes, memories, and prayers as they honor the life Shannon lived and the joy he brought into the lives of so many people.
Outside of school, Shannon worked at Taco Bell and previously at McDonald’s, where coworkers and friends also came to know his outgoing personality and kind spirit. Originally from Mobile, Shannon built meaningful friendships and connections that extended far beyond the classroom and athletic fields.
