Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Hunterdon Central Regional High School was placed under a brief lockdown Tuesday afternoon following police activity in the surrounding area, prompting a coordinated safety response involving multiple nearby schools. The precaution was implemented around dismissal time after law enforcement notified school officials that officers were actively searching for an individual in the vicinity who was believed to potentially be moving toward the campus area.
According to school communications officer Maren Smagala, administrators immediately followed established safety protocols once alerted by police. Because the situation occurred during dismissal, when students are typically moving throughout hallways, preparing to leave, or being picked up, staff acted quickly to bring all students back inside the building. The process was carried out in an orderly and controlled manner, ensuring that students and staff were secured in classrooms and designated safe areas without panic or disruption.
The school first entered a full lockdown status, which restricts movement throughout the building and secures all entry points. After initial assessment and communication with law enforcement, the situation transitioned into a “hold” status, meaning students remained inside while normal classroom activity was paused. This phase lasted approximately 20 minutes while police continued their search in the surrounding area.
During the incident, officials maintained constant communication with law enforcement to assess any potential risk to the campus. Authorities later confirmed that the individual being sought was taken into custody off-campus and did not pose an active threat to the school community. Following this development, police issued an all-clear, allowing school operations to resume.
The lockdown was lifted at approximately 2:25 p.m., after which students were safely dismissed for the day. School officials emphasized that all procedures were completed smoothly and that student safety remained the top priority throughout the event.
In addition to Hunterdon Central, nearby schools including Robert Hunter Elementary School and Reading-Fleming Intermediate School were also placed under temporary lockdown orders as a precautionary measure. These lockdowns were similarly brief and were lifted once law enforcement confirmed that the situation had been resolved.
No injuries were reported, and there was no indication that the individual being sought entered any school property. Officials described the response as precautionary, underscoring the importance of rapid communication between schools and law enforcement during nearby police operations.
While the incident caused temporary disruption, it ultimately concluded without escalation, highlighting the role of established safety protocols in managing uncertain or developing situations near school campuses.
